METAL GAY SOLID @ SCHWULES MUSEUM (12/2018-05/2019)
|
"Fuck that guy and his bullshit shirt piece of trash" In late 2017, I made a shirt showcasing two hundred comments debating the sexuality of Metal Gear Solid characters. Excerpts were taken from forums, videos, article comments, etc.
I wanted to highlight the bizarre reasons people come up with to deny queer narratives in media (whether or not this is "good" representation is something else entirely). These range from the classic "russian tuant" to identifying an ally soldier by the feel of their bomb-damaged testicles. Overall, I’ve gotten a lot of positive comments from other people in the LGBT+ community. On the other hand, the existence of this shirt has generated enough debate that I could, in theory, make another one. The shirt was featured in Rainbow Arcade in Berlin, an exhibition focusing on the history of queerness in gaming. You can read more about the shirt on Buzzfeed News, Kotaku, or Mashable. If you'd like to own it, it is available for purchase here. |
